Hiring a caretaker in Bengaluru

Bengaluru has one of the largest populations of seniors whose children live abroad or in another Indian city, which makes remote care management the defining problem here. Families want a caregiver they can brief on a call at 9pm IST from Chicago or London, and they want written proof that the person in the flat is who the agency said they are.

What is different about Bengaluru

The city’s care market is organised around tech-corridor geography: placements in Whitefield, Sarjapur, Electronic City and north Bengaluru behave as separate sub-markets with different travel times and different wage levels. A caregiver who can reach a Whitefield flat by 7am generally cannot also cover Hebbal.

The other Bengaluru-specific factor is that many households are Kannada-speaking while the senior may be more comfortable in Tamil, Telugu or Hindi. Language matching across three generations in one household is a real requirement, and it is worth stating explicitly.

Languages

Kannada is the local language and is widely spoken by caregivers based in the city. Hindi and English are common in placements with IT-professional families, and Tamil or Telugu is often the better match for seniors from Tamil Nadu or Andhra Pradesh living in Bengaluru. Ask the agency to confirm the caregiver’s spoken languages on a short call before the trial, rather than after joining.

Climate and seasonal planning

Bengaluru’s cool nights are comfortable for most seniors, but the combination of dust, vehicle pollution and occasional construction dust aggravates breathing problems. Monsoon showers arrive unevenly across the city and can break a shift for an hour. Because nights are cool, families often skip blankets — older adults who move less at night can get cold without noticing, so a light blanket and a room-temperature check at night are worth building into the routine.

Local hiring patterns

A common Bengaluru pattern is the three-month arrangement: the family hires before a visit home, keeps the caregiver through the visit, and then decides whether to continue remotely. That works only if the first fortnight was a proper trial with written notes. NRIs often pay a premium for a caregiver who can send a short daily written update — a text message is often more useful than a photograph.

What to verify in Bengaluru

  1. Ask for government photo ID plus address proof, and check the photo actually matches the person.
  2. Request police verification with the acknowledgement number; verbal confirmation is not verification.
  3. Ask the agency whether the caregiver has previously worked with families living abroad, and what update format they use.
  4. Confirm replacement turnaround in writing, including during festival season when absences peak.
  5. Do a video call with the caregiver before they start, so the senior recognises them on day one.

FAQ

Questions families in Bengaluru ask

How do I verify a caregiver from another state?

Ask for ID and address proof, call the previous family yourself, and require police verification before an overnight arrangement. If the caregiver is being placed by an agency, ask which documents the agency collected and whether it re-checks them on renewal.

Should I pay the caregiver directly or via the agency?

Direct payment to the caregiver, with a separate, clearly itemised agency fee, gives you a record of exactly what the caregiver receives. Many disputes are not about fraud but about two different numbers in the family’s head. Whatever you choose, get one written sheet showing salary, agency fee and payment date.

Can I use a camera at home?

Only with the senior’s knowledge and consent. A camera is useful for checking that a shift started and that the senior is up, but it is a poor substitute for a person who can physically reach the flat. Consent matters both ethically and legally — explain what it is for and who can see the footage.
