Hiring a caretaker in Chennai

Chennai care is built around strong family networks, and most hiring still happens through word of mouth rather than agencies. That works well when the network is active and badly when the family has moved away. The city’s pattern is a senior couple or a widowed parent in the family home, with children in Bengaluru, the US or the Gulf.

What is different about Chennai

The practical consequence: verification falls on whoever is doing the recommending, and informal recommendations rarely include police verification. It is fair to ask a well-meaning relative for the caregiver’s ID and previous employer’s number even when the introduction came from within the community.

Tamil-speaking caregivers are plentiful; caregivers who can handle a senior who speaks only Tamil and a visiting doctor who speaks only English are less common, and that bilingual gap is where misunderstandings about medicines usually start.

Languages

Tamil is the default, and most families want it that way — a senior who cannot talk freely with their caregiver is not well supported. English-speaking caregivers exist and are priced higher. If the household also has Hindi- or Telugu-speaking members, say so; some agencies maintain caregivers who cover two languages.

Climate and seasonal planning

Chennai is hot and humid almost year-round, and the heat is a daily care issue. Dehydration, skin infections in folds, and heat-related dizziness in seniors with cardiac or kidney conditions are the common problems. Air-conditioning is not available in every home, so plan for cross-ventilation, ORS or water at fixed times, and avoid the afternoon sun entirely. Cyclone warnings twice a year require an actual plan: stocked medicines, charged phones, and a named person to call.

Local hiring patterns

Live-in caregivers are common for widowed seniors living alone, and the arrangement is often organised within the same district or even the same village network. Agencies are used more for nursing than for companionship. Discharge planning from hospitals is a frequent trigger for a first hire — arranging a caregiver two days before discharge is far calmer than arranging one on the day.

What to verify in Chennai

  1. Get photo ID, address proof and at least one previous employer’s phone number, and call it yourself.
  2. Ask whether police verification has been done, and by whom; if nobody has done it, do it before overnight care starts.
  3. Write down hours, weekly off, festival leave and payment date on one page signed by both sides.
  4. Agree the replacement policy in writing, including how many days the agency takes.
  5. Keep a second caregiver’s number as backup before you need it.

FAQ

Questions families in Chennai ask

Do I need an agency if I found someone through family?

You do not need one for the introduction, but you may still need verification, a written contract and a replacement plan. Those three things are what agencies actually sell. If someone in the family will handle them properly, hiring directly is entirely reasonable.

How do I arrange care before a hospital discharge?

Confirm the equipment you will need (bed, commode chair, walker), arrange the caregiver from two days before discharge, brief them on the discharge instructions in writing, and schedule the first follow-up visit before you leave the hospital. Ask the hospital for a written medication list rather than relying on memory.

What should be in writing?

Shift timings and weekly off, exact tasks in and out of scope, monthly payment amount and date, who pays for travel and meals, notice period for either side, replacement timeline, and the emergency contact list. One page is enough.
